With Census Day 2030 just four years away today, a coalition of data users, local planners, academics, business leaders and census experts warned of delayed planning, testing and investment that are doomed to repeat the shortcomings of the 2020 national headcount. The Census Project released a detailed plan of investment for $2.1 billion for the U.S. Census Bureau in Fiscal Year 2027 in hopes of avoiding a second consecutive decennial that failed to improve upon its predecessor.
“The Census Project’s new analysis of approved funding for the decennial and American Community Survey (ACS), now coming on the heels of a radical change to the 2026 Test, has the planning dashboard flashing red all over for 2030,” Census Project co-director Mary Jo Mitchell said.
