Where America’s population grew (and shrank) the most since 2020

The country’s population is shifting, and the map of where Americans live looks increasingly lopsided — especially in suburban counties, new data from the Census Bureau shows.

Between 2020 and 2025, the fastest growth was clustered in pockets of the South and West, where outlying counties of major metro areas posted some of the biggest gains. Those outer-ring suburban counties grew more than twice as fast as more densely populated urban areas, a Washington Post analysis found.
