Commerce Secretary Nomination Hearing Set for January 29

The U.S. Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee has scheduled a hearing for January 29, 2025 on the nomination of Howard Lutnick to serve as Secretary of Commerce in the new Trump Administration.

The Department of Commerce is the Census Bureau’s parent agency and has significant oversight and control over the Bureau and its activities.

Mr. Lutnick co-chaired the president’s transition team. He is CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald, an American-based financial services firm.

According to an advance statement from Committee Chair Ted Cruz (R-TX), “Howard Lutnick is an excellent choice to lead the Department of Commerce, and his vast experience will serve him well in his mission to promote America’s unlimited entrepreneurial spirit. Mr. Lutnick will play a key role in unleashing unprecedented innovation and ensuring our nation’s job creators are well equipped to expand opportunities for good-paying jobs.”

Ranking Member Maria Cantwell (D-WA) has not yet commented.
