U.S. House of Representatives Organizes Census Funding and Oversight Committees

In mid-January, committees in the U.S. House of Representatives with responsibility for funding and overseeing the U.S. Census Bureau met to officially organize and confirm their rosters.

House Appropriations Committee

On January 15, the Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee Representative Tom Cole (R-OK) announced that the following Republican members were appointed to serve on the House Commerce, Justice, Science Appropriations Subcommittee—the subcommittee that funds the U.S Census Bureau. The new members of the subcommittee are Representative Mark Alford (R-MO), Representative Dale Strong (R-AL), and Representative Riley Moore (R-WV), who is a freshman member.

Also on January 15, Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Committee Representative Rosa DeLauro announced the roster of Democrats assigned to the CJS subcommittee. Representative Grace Meng (D-NY) is the new Ranking Member of the CJS subcommittee, taking over from former Representative Matt Cartwright who lost his reelection bid. The three new Democrats on the CJS roster are Representative Glenn Ivey, a freshman from Maryland, Representative Madeleine Dean (D-PA), and Representative Frank Mrvan (D-IN).

House Oversight and Government Reform  

On January 17, Representative James Comer (R-KY), Chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, which has oversight authority of the U.S. Census Bureau, announced its subcommittee rosters and leadership. At press time, the Committee had not confirmed if census issues will fall under the jurisdiction of the Subcommittee on Government Operations, which will be chaired by Representative Pete Sessions (R-TX), or will be exclusively managed at the full committee level. On January 14, Chairman Comer released the complete list of new and returning Republican members to the committee. On January 15, the new Ranking Member of the Commtitee, Representative Gerald E. Connolly (D-VA) announced the list of new and returning Democratic members appointed to the Committee.
