Update: Congressional Action to Fund Census Bureau in Fiscal Year 2024

Share

In a flurry of pre-Thanksgiving activity, Congress moved legislation impacting funding for the U.S. Census Bureau on related parallel tracks.

Continuing Resolution
Currently, all Federal agencies, including the Census Bureau, are being funded by a continuing resolution (CR). The current CR expires on November 17. To keep the government fully open, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a measure (H.R. 6363) that includes two separate deadlines, January 19, and February 2, 2024, for funding all Federal agencies. Under this measure, which the House passed on November 14 by a vote of 336-95, the Census Bureau is funded at its FY 2023 level through February 2, 2024. The U.S. Senate is expected to pass the bill and send it to President Biden before the current CR expires.

FY 2024 CJS
On November 15, the U.S. House of Representatives attempted to bring to the floor H.R. 5893, its version of the FY 2024 Commerce, Justice, Science (CJS) appropriations bill, which funds the Census Bureau. A procedural motion to begin debate failed by a vote of 198-223. The House may attempt to bring the (CJS) bill back to the floor for consideration after it returns from its Thanksgiving holiday.
