Census Bureau Announces George Cook As Acting Director

In a September 19 memo, the Census Bureau announced that Mr. George Cook would be “Performing the Duties of Director.” He takes over the position from Dr. Ron Jarmin who had been serving as the acting director since the previous director, Robert Santos, departed in February. Dr. Jarmin will continue to serve as the agency’s deputy director and chief operating officer.

In a bio posted on the Census Bureau’s home page, George Cook is also listed as chief of staff in the Office of the Under Secretary for Economic Affairs at the Department of Commerce (DOC). In addition, he is performing the non-exclusive functions and duties of the Under Secretary for Economic Affairs at the DOC.

Prior to coming to the Trump Administration, Mr. Cook worked as an institutional investor and economic analyst, managing portfolios of global government bonds, interest rates, and currencies while conducting in-depth research on economic and policy developments to support investment positions. In these positions, his bio notes that he used census data extensively.
