February 2016 Update

FY2017 Census Bureau funding: Thank you to the more than 50 organizations that signed a Census Project letter to members of the House and Senate Appropriations Committees and Commerce, Justice, and Science Subcommittees, urging full funding of the President’s Fiscal Year 2017 budget request for 2020 Census planning and the American Community Survey (ACS). The letter is posted on our website. The annual appropriations process continues to move forward at a steady (so far!) pace, with Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker scheduled to testify before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, and Science on February 23 @ 4:30pm (H309 The Capitol).

New Fact Sheet: We have updated our popular Fact Sheet explaining the importance of adequate funding for the 2020 Census and ACS, with new information related to the FY2017 budget request. “FY2017 U.S. Census Bureau Appropriations: Why Full Funding Matters,” is available on our website.

Census Advocacy Day on the Hill (March 16): The National Association for Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) Educational Fund, a long-time Census Project participant, is organizing a Census Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill on March 16, to highlight the importance of 2020 Census planning and urge Congress to provide sufficient funding for the census and ACS. NALEO has created a target list of Members to visit and invites census stakeholder organizations to help schedule or take part in one or more of the meetings. Please contqct Laura Maristany, director of NALEO’s Washington Office, atlmaristany@naleo.org if your group can participate. Census Advocacy Day is a timely opportunity for stakeholder organizations to demonstrate nonpartisan, diverse support for an accurate census and robust ACS. Please help make this effort a success by scheduling and/or participating in meetings alongside our coalition partners.

Census Project WEBINAR reminder: The Census Project is teaming up with the Association of Public Data Users (APDU) to host a webinar on March 2nd (3:00PM ET/12:00PM PT, when we will unveil our new Toolkit, “Supporting the Census & ACS: A Toolkit for Coalition Building.” This resource will help state and local organizationsharness their influence in support of an accurate census and comprehensive ACS. Click here to register for the webinar.

‘Housekeeping’ note: Recently, a number of our faithful coalition members dropped off our listserv, having unintentionally “unsubscribed” from the list. To avoid an inadvertent disconnect from our list, we suggest that you either delete the “Unsubscribe” line from our emails when forwarding to your networks, or use the “forward to a friend” link at the bottom. (When someone down the forwarding chain unsubscribes, it affects the original recipient, we think.) We hope that solves the problem, and we thank you for sharing our information with other interested stakeholders!
